Am finding this a very challenging solve but after some bursts of light am left with NW quadrant and have ground to halt. A hint on 1d 'Scores of sheep after shearing left to sit awkwardly (6)' would be very welcome. NB clue may be wordplay only; if not then will have misprint in definition. Thanks!

Thanks ginge for taking the trouble to help me. Unfortunately I think my brain is running out and I haven't cracked it yet. Could I ask for a (slightly) heavier hint? This NW quadrant is quite a beast.

Tricky grid fill but got there. Can't summon the brainpower to identify the original literary work nor find the second work in the grid. Hint to the latter appreciated.

I got the second work simply by treating the grid as a wordsearch. Reading horizontally, 99% of it can be seen...
