Hi Elle
Apologies for the delayed response (had some major hoovering to do!).
I've got no issue with the parsing. By 'get away with it', I mean that the answer is derogatory and, although I take Cerasus's point about the structure and the hint of &lit, as you point out, 'offence' in the clue applies specifically to 'troll', not to the whole answer. So I don't think the setter could argue that they've told us we should be looking for an offensive term. (Even if they have, why include it in an Observer crossword!? It's not the Sun.)

Can anyone give me a clue to the parsing of 19d ? I have guessed the answer from all the acrosses but can't see why.

On the whole one of the easier ones lately.
Stuck on 29a. Slept on it and no clearer this morning. Homophone seems obvious but what has BBC4 got to do with it; heavy sigh.
Agree with comments on 9a. Spiders give my daughter the heebie-jeebies and the solution to this clue in no way describes the symptoms.
Also, learned that "samiest" is actually a word.

@Cerasus. TX for your response, I haven't heard "side" used in that context for years. Would channel not be more appropriate in this day and age? BBC4 did not come into existence until the digital era when we now talk about "which channel?". If clue had used BBC2 I would not have had a problem. Maybe I've over-thought this one.
