Cheers Aristo - fiendishly good!
Cheers Ginge - thanks for the considerations. You are quite right about the lack of definition In the pick-up clue. (had been up all night....).

As for the “OTE” and “LU” sadly it was not a sophisticated homophone as you have credited it, merely a reference to earnings on the tube = LU = London Underground (these drivers are well known down here for their outrageous salaries...)

Well done, Aristo, liked your clue.
Thanks, Ginge, for the silver and taking the time to write up such a detailed summary. I thought it was a good word choice, with lots of possibilities.

Hi paul, very honest of you, (think I'd have stayed schtoom myself) I took it as a homophone of loot (money) as LU (not given in Chambers) as London Underground didn't occur to me.

Thank you, ginge, for the honor and for the smattering of decadence. So many good clues this week (that peterm is an especially devious setter).
See you all next week.

Hi again dorrien, obviously they couldn't be incorporated into the surface, a great shame.

Thanks for hosting, ginge, and for taking the time for such a thorough critique of this week's excellent entries. I share your misgivings about my own effort but I thought it was close enough to try it on a bit. Very well done, aristo. I feel honoured to have moved from "shady" to "specially devious".

The word was shadowy. Big difference between that and shady.
