(presumably CHINA)
19 Down: - "Writer lies about book with soundless ending" (5) I-S-N
(presumably IBSEN)

19 Is, lies (in position, say) + B, book +En(ding), soundless ending = remove the 'ding'.

Chia (seed) about Northern (N)

Chia is a plant with edible seeds, around N for Northern.

Yes, I just looked up CHIA, Jolan, and it IS a seed - I never knew this!
