Could anyone help with explaining this answer please:

A round plate visible during an intermission (8)

I have A*P*A*S*. The answer must be APPLAUSE. The intermission is "a pause" but how does "plate visible" give "pl"? (If it was "place" and a typo then it would make sense).

Any thoughts welcome.

Does it not mean pl(ate) can be seen during a pause?

"pl" is in Collins Dictionary as an abbreviation for "plate".
"Applause" looks good.
