You’re making this so difficult, all of you! I thought I’d chosen something tricky to clue, forgetting how tricky you are. A few favorite touches: sunray’s un-British impudence @2, mattrom’s pimples coming to a head @3, paul’s tumbling shares @6, kt’s ex-type-a @14, the untouchable skin condition in both skyewalker @13 and peterm @18, and ginge’s very clever subtractive @22, which I might not have gotten without his guidance. I’ll go with mattrom’s down clue @24:

She ran riot on board ship, with idiotic acts (8)

Here’s the prize. I’ve read several moving accounts of the townspeople lining the streets of Portland to honor the two captains, only in their twenties.

Thanks so much for the inspired entries, everyone.

Liked your clue Mattrom - thanks Aristo for a good challenge.

In 1779 people in my part of the world witnessed a little skirmish off Flamborough Head. John Paul Jones ( a Scottish pirate with a bit of help from the French Navy! ) defeated the British ... losing his own ship in the process!

Congrats mattrom (I ought to create a macro to type that!) and thanks aristo.
Thanks also to tyke. I had heard of John Paul Jones in association with the American War of Independence (and also with Led Zeppelin, but let that pass!), but I never knew what he had accomplished.

Thanks, tyke. I remember the Bonhomme Richard and "I have not yet begun to fight" from elementary school. I'm quite sure the story doesn't fit in with the current curriculum.

Thank you Aristo, a nice surprise with so many excellent clues.
Thanks also to yourself and Tyke for the tales of derring-do....and where's our Errol? On the other hand such a loss of lives.
Hope to see you all next week.
