A decent puzzle but I was disappointed that one of the linked solutions, with only a later connection to the main theme, was included rather than the sole representative of the distaff side who was there throughout. The grid would have allowed it.

Thanks chrise. I was misled by the extra references.

Can any one parse 14d? I have a "write in". I too would have aplreciated reference to a NE county which is pushing up the daisies.

Salvaged and current give first two letters (going ahead); "got even" gives the rest.

But KT17 how do you spell it? and how does it relate to the clue? Is alcohol involved.

Thanks Chrise for your help with the extra words. I got the main theme fairly quickly once I realised that Abbey Road was never going to work. Not many left now. A few left to grind through. No doubt I'll be back.

And here I am with three left:

27ac Complaint from hollow, dozy guard about leader of escape (9) I have R?S?N?T?Y Are my crossers correct?
21ac It looks like our security service's repressed and dissipated (8)
I have ?I????E?T What is the definition?
17d Opposed by many people, the Spanish Inquisition's first rising(7)
I have H???I?E

I've struggled with some of the parsing so I may have wrong crossers.
Can anyone help with hints.
