Just noticed the right hand column of the grid.

these are both themed. i confess that i wrote them in without reference to the clues!

A decent puzzle but I was disappointed that one of the linked solutions, with only a later connection to the main theme, was included rather than the sole representative of the distaff side who was there throughout. The grid would have allowed it.

Can any one parse 14d? I have a "write in". I too would have aplreciated reference to a NE county which is pushing up the daisies.

Salvaged and current give first two letters (going ahead); "got even" gives the rest.

23 was a corker, I thought.

But KT17 how do you spell it? and how does it relate to the clue? Is alcohol involved.

Thanks Chrise for your help with the extra words. I got the main theme fairly quickly once I realised that Abbey Road was never going to work. Not many left now. A few left to grind through. No doubt I'll be back.
