Hi Chris

krautrockers = Neu!

tra- as prefix connotes 'beyond'

Yes Chris, somewhat esoteric - and rather an acquired taste!

Hi chrise, re peterm 23, it also uses neu (the German for new) + tr(i)al.
Quite recently fiery used the band Neu! as part of wordplay.

Hi again chrise, as we're approaching voting time, re nemo 15, if you look at the Spanish coat of arms from the wiki "pillars of Hercules" the motto appears across (on) the pillars. So a reference guide rather than contributing to the wordplay ?

Hi folks barring any last minute entries we have a bumper crop of 33 clues from 17 setters. I don't envy you in your task of making your "X".

Chrise: my 15.

The phrase ne plus ultra was allegedly carved on the Pillars of Hercules (Straits of Gibraltar) and I used the reference to allow "on either side" implying "neutral".
