OK: time's up. I feared a low turnout after my unfortunate mis-match between brain and finger when setting the answer but we achieved (by my count) a respectable entry of 22 clues from 13 setters.
Several competitors offered ingenious anagrams but I was immediately taken by bbm's elegantly simple cd at #27. The winner for me, though, was aristophanes' #18 with his clever reference to Poe's onomatopoeic poem while incorporating the poet's name. Cunning stuff indeed.
