1. Found top around my starting point. (4, 4)

I had all intersecting letters: B _ S _ C _ M _

So from 'starting point'.... I deduce BASE CAMP

But what is the rest all about? Cap=Top? Mesa? "Around" as an anagram indicator?

And does anyone know of another 50/50% straightforward/cryptic crossword? £4 a week is too much, when I barely read the rest of the paper.

Base and Found are synonyms, both meaning to start something
Cap - top
M is from My, 'my starting point', first letter.

...and the 'around' means that 'cap' surrounds the 'm'.

Hi malone, I don't think it's/see it as an &lit so might not "starting point" be the definition with m' being my, otherwise as you've parsed it.

CBP, glad the basic version worked/helped.

I do lots of crosswords and know there're terms such as 'an &lit', 'charade', 'anagrind' etc. Some are easier to recognise than to define - and I wouldn't even attempt to explain the ones I recognise!
