This has been a real struggle and I'm left with these:-
29 Across - "Old African film - and welcome theatre performance" (6)

31 Across - "Recruits ultimately neglectful in returning without shirts" (9)
E-L-S-E-S (ENLISTERS, I imagine)
41 Down - "Get involved in a day to celebrate trainee nurses" (9)
I-T-R-E-E (INTERFERE or INTERVENE?)

29. Ethiop, ET (film) + hi (welcome) + op (theatre performance)
31. Enlistees, (neglectfu)l in sine (without) reversed + Tees (shirts)
41. Intervene, VE (day) in interne (trainee)

Many thanks, Ginge. I've never heard of Ethiop. Also couldn't find "enlistees" anywhere when I looked for it, so presumed the answer may have been "enlisteRs". And I never realised "intern" could also be spelt with an "e" on the end - often when this compiler uses "nurses", there's one word "nursing" another word to make a longer word! Thanks again.
