This is, as usual, my very last word to get!

The clue is:
Twists and turns, getting wicket - afterwards is inactive (6)

pattern is:
-r-s-s

I know there are a heap of words that fit but they don't make sense!

I considered wrests and left it as it seemed to have a different meaning but when I saw the way you had written it, it made sense.
