Hi xwordfan. The German word for Sunday is SONNTAG, not SONTAG. So I don't follow your logic!

I agree with your spelling but apparently it can be spelt with one 'n' though personally never seen it. It's more of a desperate clutching at straws on an over complicated crossword!

If we are assuming that 17 down in the left grid is an anagram of sontagt which is what has been said already: could the Answer be, an acronym for an IO plus an abreviation for a position in the armed forces?

According to RedHead's "alternates" explanation, the letter for 17D would be T, not W. aghh! Yes it does all seem a bit too over-complicated -- this is supposed to be fun isn't it?! :-)

Hi xwordfan, if we follow the instructions about the 26 letters of the alphabet being inserted alternately, the extra letter should be T, shouldn’t it?

The missing letters mst go in normal order ...we need E for 12a ....first part gives ring road (sorry for the answer but everyone is at sea here) ..add in the E and anagram it to make rio grande to enter in the left grid ??

That means 17d would need a W so town gas may be right....

... and the "alternate" bit in the preamble must mean that going down the clues in normal order the bit that has to be anagrammed alternates between 1st bit of the clue and 2nd bit ...
