I think the answer has to be Palm, most of 'maple' chopped up, anagrammed. I don't think Palm is a wood, type of wood - just a type of tree, but it's not something I know much about!

Thanks malone.I agree re palm being a wood.Dictionnary gives it as a plant.Have be a wood for this crossword.

I had exactly the same problem with this even though I guessed it immediately. Yes it’s a tree, not a wood but I suppose...maybe a case of needing a hand with endless syrup all over the place?
