Thanks, that sounds feasible but rather convoluted on the setter's part.

That leaves another headscratcher at 15 across

"American first-class train?" (4)

All letters are checked giving "DOPE" and I cannot parse that!!

"do PE" is train.
"Dope" is American slang for "excellent".

My CD-Rom BRB doesn't give excellent for "DOPE" so more fool me for relying on it to be correct. I've just checked my hard copy 12th edition and, of course, it is there. Shame that Chambers have no plans to update the CD-Rom.
