Rad, thanks, I missed the Roman numeral idea. Finished now.

I thought it was a great puzzle. As with other Gaston historical ones, you dont have to know a lot of history to work it out.

I did not like the clue marca and malone discussed. I thought it was inaccurate and the rudeness unnecessary but maybe I am old-fashioned, and perhaps I mis-understood it

Really enjoyed it though - thanks Gaston

Grunger, I thought the aforementioned clue was rather puerile, but not particularly rude. You're right about the inaccuracy, the homophoney bit doesn't really work.

yes you are right - puerile is a better word. I was thinking that at a school I occasionally work at, the policy is to tell children who use the word, per the clue, that it is "inappropriate" and suggest an alternative. I sometimes think that "inappropriate" is inappropriate as children probably wont understand it.

I agree the homophone does not work, except for people who pronounce "half" to rhyme with "Alf". I have only met one such person, and I think he was Dutch.

The definition is 'flies'. There's a rare/unusual word for 'male duck' then the 'dropping leg' is one of those cricket references.Add 'section'. Wordplay indicates the answer with an extra letter in this one.

PS I solved this one backwards myself - I had the extra letter, then took a guess at the answer, then did that complicated stuff above!

Thank you malone. I thought that might be how the clue worked.

Hi malone & cloverjo, rather than one word for male duck is it not the usual abbreviation for male + the rare duck ...

Yes, Ginger, that's right - I didn't mean to type 'male duck', I meant to put 'rare duck'! I didn't notice the error - and the missing out of the essential Male part of the answer.

Sorry, cloverjo - I hope I didn't hold you up too long?!
