the clue is :Cooking the books, no number of letters given and answer will be as near as possible to how it sounds, just can't get my head around it and it is driving me mad, hope someone out there can help.

I’ve seen it answered on another forum as ‘Audition’, but I can’t see how it works, myself

Also, ‘Auditorium’, but again no idea how it works.

Jonty implied that there were homophones........but maybe not all.

I often find that quiz questions can be pretty weak and often don't follow crossword convention.
