In RT31 10A the entry is : Financial shark, for all to see, gets more confident.(6)

Frankly I had enough letters from down and across words to guess the answer and quickly realised how one of the clues ( more confident) gave me 5 of the 6 letters in it but clearly there is a clue in there for the sixth letter which still escapes me.

This has happened before when I have failed to account for all the letters. However on all occasions past,a quick check with Chris Mart's solution has provided the reasons as to how the full answer was reached

Interestingly on this occasion this is the sole word on which Chris Mart provides no explanation as to how he got to the right answer

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks

The first word in the answer is often in crosswords - a single letter meaning 'for all to see ' (at the cinema). Add a five-letter word meaning 'more confident'.

Thanks for the prompt reply. Makes complete sense now but without your explanation I doubt if I'd have ever made the connection

Either this crucial first letter was felt by Chris Mart to be so obvious as to not warrant an explanation or he too is puzzled

Mop, glad I could help. The 'for all to see ' letter has been around for ages - it's listed in my 2003 edition of Collins. I think it's probably featured in crosswords for years and years too.

Thanks Malone. I too had no idea why that one letter was there. Something else to aid future crosswords.
