Ginge, re your @21, I'm not sure if I'm correct in my reasoning, but I see "empty promises", i.e. P + S, and "and in it" as possible anagram fodder, leaving P, M and E. Is "emp" an accepted abbreviation for "empty", giving that word in your clue a double function, or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Hi skyewalker it's an attempt at an &lit (which you might feel needs a specific definition rather than ...) [(empty promises and in it) - misery]*.

Ginge, I realise that also leaves an "O" so I'm obviously not on the right track!

Hello again, everyone. As the "young Mr. Grace" was wont to say in the execrable "Are You Being Served?", "You've all done very well". (Apologies to anyone who actually enjoyed Mrs Slocombe's pussy etc.). I should, by now, no longer be surprised by the wit and invention of the entrants, but continue to be impressed.

From SteveA's succinct one-word starter, followed by Mattrom and KT17 going down the "Road to Hell", there were many other gems. I'm in danger of going through each clue in order now so I'll have to gloss over some worthy entries.

I was extremely pleased to see the return of Pigale @6, who continues to amaze by constructing clever clues in what is not even her first language. In fact, I hadn't even heard of a "privative prefix" until I looked it up!

Of the anagrams, subtractive or otherwise, my favourite was Sunray @16. Marty's @18, which could be taken in more than one way, gave me a smile. I liked both of Mattrom's "bath" clues and FJ's "Vicious spin".

I'm not pedantic, just pernickety, honest! A couple of clues I liked but felt weren't quite there: Paul @12, I don't see "ointment" as a verb ( "soothe" ) and FJ @27 "underwhelmed" which could be a definition for "disappointed" but not "disappointment".

Anyway, to put you out of your misery, my winner is:

Aristo @9 with his ingenious

Give only one star to phone feature; it's supposed to be a fix and it's not as advertised

I'm a little late for Wimbledon but here is your prize. Hope you enjoy.

An appropriate supplementary bit of music (apologies if it's not to your taste).

Best wishes, all

Congrats aristo.

Thanks for hosting skyewalker and also for the mention.

I hope I am not infringing on skywalker's prerogative to post videos.
SW, I hope you do not mind my posting this video I saw today. It is about Senator Collins from Maine. And today's word.
I believe aristo resides in Maine.

Very timely.
