Hi all. Parsing help please.
1a Source of light snacks originally served around English city.

I've answered it as LEEDS but cannot see why. Any ideas ?

Last clue so would like to know that I was correct.

Thanks.

LED is a source of light, add S from 'snacks originally'
+E, English. LE E D S.

LED is a light source.
"S"nacks originally is "s"
"E" for English.
Leeds is a city.

Thanks both.
I could see the LED part but was over thinking the snacks part expecting a type of snack rather than the initial letter 'S'

Perhaps I'm just hungry !

4 interlinked clues are vexing me at the top left. A nudge with one might help me in the right direction.

13a Backing cultural pursuits in a Turkic ruler's fleecy coat (9)

A???A???N

So, definition might be backing or might be fleecy coat. Where should I look?

Many thanks in advance.

Fleecy coat is the definition....

PS The 'cultural pursuits' = reverse something.

Oh, okay. Now, combining the words that fit with the help of Malone, I get A with ARTS backwards and presumably KHAN is a "Turkic" ruler, and an ASTRAKHAN is a fleecy coat?

Saw this in the quick solve, but discounted it. Many thanks for the tip.

Glad you got it, Smiffy. I always like it when people want just a nudge or hints. Yes, Astrakhan is defined as 'lambskin with curled wool from the Middle East'. (I think it's 'coat' like a dog's coat, rather than as an actual garment.)

Having looked it up, was quite shocked to discover that astrakhan refers to the soft curly black pelt of an unborn lamb, or one not more than 3 days old (commonly made into coats of course though now with fake fur).
Marginally better than trapping, I suppose
