I agree with Cerasus.
I used an "n " because that word is a derivative from one connected with the moon.
Considering the theme of the crossword, I think we can safely assume that this is correct?

Everyman here and hallo! Excellent spot on 21d, and very chastening; fulsome apologies. I changed this clue at the last minute after the test solvers failed to be amused by a preposterous pun (on the N version). Because it's a prize puzzle, we will leave the clue as is and accept both answers.

Many thanks, by the way, to all who solve and/or discuss the Sunday puzzles.

@Observereveryman

Thank you so much for coming on and clarifying 21d and for marking the 50th anniversary of the moon landing.

As Jazzgirl and Cerasus have already said, it's an absolute treat that you've come on here - it really is appreciated.

Now there are three threads on this puzzle! This seems to have the most interest and great to have it graced by the setter. I wondered if 21 might have been made clearer and more apposite by ending "more like the moon?" or somesuch - rather than nuttier (which seems just a repeat...). I take the first five letters of 24 to be an adjective connected to the first three - which means to go off.

Hi Prospero, good spot on the first part of 24a being an adjective, I completely missed that. I think you've got it exactly.

I went for P option, having discovered there's a type of nut (non-edible, as in nuts and bolts) called a loop nut. Love educational crosswords.
