This is usually straightforward, but I don't understand the wordplay for 1a.

Solution is CORNEA, clue is "Centre close to ear and part of eye".

I can see that ear might be corn, but that's all.

sounds like core (centre) near (close)

I got in a hole thinking "Centre" was 'Core' and just kept digging :-(
