I thought this was a most enjoyable puzzle, testing even once the theme became clear.

I almost fell at the final hurdle, German igneous rock, but had a flash of inspiration.

Which of the alternatives for the first letter of 15d - 'peltry dealer scratching head of one who treats leather' - is correct (and why)?

KT17, I agree, this puzzle was a delight.

Son1... I have U at 15 D. The 'one who treats leather' begins with C. 'Scratching head' removes that, giving the entry. The 'peltry dealer' is that with an F at the beginning. (PS I am sometimes wrong with these things!)
