Btw - if one has used the crossword solver or forum, is it good manners to refrain from submitting one’s solution? Bearing in mind that personally, I would have to share my ineptitude with helpers, meaning £1 each of a £25 prize were I lucky enough to get noticed by the judges for my prizewinning solution?

I think I would mahe a distinction between clues given and answers - I wouldn't feel happy about submitting a solution if answers had been given. I never submit answers anyway, so the problem doesn't arise.

On the other discussion, I don't like puzzles where you have to muck about with your solution before writing it in - I never attempt those. I did once complete a Mephisto - to be fair, I haven't attempted many, as I don't take a Sunday paper. (When I don't have golf on Sunday morning, I do try the Everyman - I agree that it isn't what it was.)
