Why is it “very” please ?

Very is a kind of light, see Chambers, and Very can also mean 'fitting', suitable etc.

Thanks. I didn't know the light = very definition.. I'm struggling to find a phrase where fitting could be replaced by very, though. Any suggestions?

I can only think of the sentence "It's the very thing", but here "very" tends to mean "the most fitting thing".
