Hi kirky, depending on how much of the grid you have filled and how many of the 8 down thematics you have; by looking down where the word provided by the grid placed letters, there's a heavy hint to the author in his previous occupation.
Please post again if this doesn't help.

Any nudge with 15d and 20a would be much appreciated. Also I cannot see how the first letter of the answer to 2d is derived

15 D - Inquisitor is a ……… Dismisses angry = remove the first five letters. Phrase is the definition.

2 D Yes, I wasn't sure about the beginning of 2 D. I think the first two letters = the 'at' in the clue, the last four coming from Parisian Green.
