Unless you have most of the solutions ready to,fill, then the 2 words ending in X could lead to the first letter of a 10 word solution either way. Those 10 letter words have self crossers so could be entered either way. My first attempt was wrong but knowing the C and U words put me straight

Thanks for your help. I finally managed to put the word together. I must remember that moon for the future. I only do the cryptic crossword on a Saturday, so perhaps don't come across it often.

It was so hot here yesterday - was it hot everywhere?

Unfortunately, I haven't yet got any solutions ending in X. I'll keep plugging away.

MrsH - The C word looked impossible with the orientation I tried initially: the other gave it to me, so was on my way.

For the C I looked up what "plai" was, and so was convinced for some time that the second word was OIL!

I have only one word ending in X. It doesn't cross with the X solution.

Oh dear! I can't put an X at the end of my S. To be fair, I had only partly parsed the answer.
