24a my problem too. I have two answers, both fitting the theme and the down letters. They vary by one vowel. Any guidance would be gratefully received. Everything else done.

It's a word for drives round bend but instead of reversing you make the last first - apparently a v distinguished figure ...

I knew what turns out to be the wrong answer from general knowledge, but I'd had to look up the right answer. It's the old "two cultures" thing, I fear.
