Hi all - can you help with some parsing? clue for 46d is: French writer, still with regiment, put on a uniform. 7 letters.

I have t_o_e_u

The answer appears to Thoreau. I can see the 'put on a uniform' = au at the end, but the rest makes no sense. Especially given Thoreau was American not French. Help!

Hi kangxi,
Tho is a form of though (still) + RE (Royal Engineers).
American rather than French (tho !).

Hi Kangxi, I can't explain the French mix up but the parsing is....

Still = THO (Abbr. of Though)

Regiment = RE + as you say, A + U

Thanks - I certainly missed the regiment connection (even though I would call the RE a corps not a regiment). And I can't see any overlap between 'still' and 'tho/though. Unless someone can come up with an explanation of the word "French" I would have to say this clue is incorrect.
