Annoyingly I have almost a fill grid with the two unclued entries in place. 31 across is however proving extremely elusive. The clue is 'All-round individual once holding it back before end of game'. At the moment I have
?D?LE with the symbol to replace the thematic letters between D and ?. The full answer is 9 letters. Any hints or pointers would be welcome. I have tried Chambers Word Wizard and similar sites but to no avail.

Hi alwayspuzzled, look again at 26d. I think you've changed the last letter instead of the 1st letter from wordplay.

Thank you for that Ginge. I now have the answer but that has made me question the unchecked first letter of 26 down for which I have L.

I've got a completed grid, clashes resolved, the 11 varying answers solved (or so it seems). But am I the only one whose 11 clue letters and grid letters make absolutely no sense?
In clue order or in a different order, I can't create a single word or phrase that makes sense. No scientific principle, no example that it might govern. I was even thinking of the possibility of Kcit using a different language, but my letters just seem wrong. I don't get it...

Ginge's simultaneous post reminds me that the only one I can create is a 3-letter word ending in W, quite frequent in the name of scientific principles. But that's about it.

Hi manudave, there are a couple of potential red herrings but the correct 11 clues give the principle in clue order (8,3) the 8 being 7's and the example of what it governs (5,6) starts at the 9th letter of the principle. Hope this helps.

Thank you ginge. I think I must have fallen for some red herrings. I'll get back to work.

Hi again manu, apologies for extending your name; predictive text automatic alteration which I've only just noticed as there is another poster with that monicker to whom I must have previously replied.
While I'm here; the surname in the principle is far from common and neither is the (6) in the (5,6).
