18 'Simple sort' is the definition. Number, verb, and add a2-letter 'line'. The 'swelling' is a noun, the 'family' is the usual crossword word, a short one.

Hi Malone
I took swelling as a verb (usually followed by up).
As a noun I think it would start with an L not a B.

I hope I've not confused Maddie!
