The solution is obvious but since when was fr an abbreviation for anything?

Chambers dictionary has :
fr abbrev. fragment; franc; frequently

Also, with a capital F :
Fr : Father (religious) ; France; French; Friar; Friday

..also Fr (chem) symbol : francium
