Thanks malone. I'm not familiar with "mete" in that sense, though I can see a link with "mete out" which I presume has the same etymological root.

Mete = boundary is given its own definition in Chambers and Collins, separate from mete, to measure. I'm not sure why 'stone' is in the clue, I hadn't paid much attention!
