Just completed a local cryptic crossword and would appreciate an explanation to this clue and answer please.

Man from Northern ireland, retired member (5)

I have got NIGEL. I can see the NI Northern Ireland bit but can't understand the GEL referring to retirement.

GEL is leg backwards - leg is a member.
