Orson, apologies for not responding much earlier to your request for help for 1 across. As soon as I posted for the last time this morning I had to go out and have only just got back. I see it has been answered for you. I struggle every week with EV, Oxymoron especially,but I will keep persevering. I found this one very neat given the shape of what is highlighted.

Don't mention it, alwayspuzzled. I assumed you had to go work, unlike many of us. I found this one much harder than the Listener and the Inquisitor this weekend but it is a neat puzzle, as you say, and especially appreciated by anyone who was around in the 1970s. Only the Blue Nun wine was missing.
