Thanks, peterm. I'm always wondering whether clues will work over there. In Clueless I had "evidence of mediocrity in scholar's record" (C on test), but thought you might not use letter grades, or not that one, and that you might use "in" instead of "on" (we'd say we'd gotten a C in French (class) but C on the French test).

Hi, Aristo. I'm definitely not a big DIY enthusiast so, like PeterM, was unaware of the term. I was almost going to ask for a parse earlier but, instead, searched on "sixpenny nail" and all became clear. The term certainly was used over this side of the pond. I don't know why it doesn't appear in either my Chambers or Oxford dictionaries.
