There are a couple that I'm not convinced about:

11a It was much maligned once, dipping end of prick in drink (5)

S?O?A - Skoda ? K + Soda (anag)

5d Britain in a mess, slain, dead (6)

?S?A?D - Island ? Slain + D (anag)

These make sense but I can't parse the begum clue in terms of 'say, tucked into a loaf' which surely gives 'eg' tucked inside 'bun' for 'begun'???

Sorry - 21a A high-ranked Muslim, say, tucked into loaf (5). Begum works for the high-ranked Musiim and the downward crossers, but eg inside bum where loaf suggests bun???

Bum = Loaf is in Chambers. I think you've let loaf = bun make you lose sight of an alternative!

Shootover, I've been there myself - fixating on one answer, one piece of wordplay, even though it doesn't work. Glad I could help.
