I missed that one by Harribobs. Was it very long ago? Pity because I like cricket-related puzzles.

Grunger, I'd never had you down as a lover of Gryllidae - how fascinating. Harribobs' bat was a Halloween puzzle.

Very clever and amusing, Malone

I could not resist it when you mentioned "bat".

Thanks, Grunger - I hoped you might appreciate that!
Did you see the clue in the I Cryptic 2566 thread? I was proud to answer that one.

I have just looked at it. Very nice clue and well done on solving it. He was a terrific player (and a gentleman). Not many Aussie stars like him.

Grunger, while I accept that cricket-related clues are quite fair. I wondered if that one was - he was an Australian cricketer no longer playing internationals.

sorry for the delay, but have been away and just returned.

I dont think it is a fair one - only cricket fans know of him, and as you say he retired some time ago.

He always played in a sporting manner, walking off when he knew he had edged a catch, and not waiting for the umpire's decision.

Well done on solving it. Had you heard of him?

Thanks, Grunger. No, I could see there was an anagram involved, so I played around with the letters - and then did some 'research'. The 'i' puzzles are often old ones from the days of the Independent - the clue was maybe relatively topical when it was first published?

I think you are right that it was topical then. I liked that the "Irish lad" was doing the stumping, whereas Gilchrist had stumped so many batsmen.

I wonder if the "Irish lad" could have been Chucker O'Mooner, who Jigjag mentioned in his humorous piece re Chuka Umunna leaving the party?
