24a. They get the game moving and always win (7)

Apparently, the answer is BEATERS, but I don't know why.
I understand the 'always win' connection, but not the first part of the clue.

I'm no shooter but the beaters flush out the (game) birds from their ground cover into the air where they may be shot.

Beaters are employed to go into the woods, trees, whatever and beat things about, with sticks, to get all the pheasants (grouse all the game [birds]) moving. That's my very untechnical explanation!

Apparently BEATERS are used to get the birds / "game" moving and up in the air in grouse hunts and the like.

Judging by the replies, I think it's safe to assume that neither Kt17 or Malone as well as myself don't go on pheasant or grouse shoots!

Brendan, the only thing I shoot is the breeze!

Whetstone, glad we could help.
