The answer is PAUSES. Anyone know why?
I can see PA and USES, but which word in the clue means 'PAUSES'?

When the clue previously appeared in a crossword, it had 'but stops for a rest' (or something very similar). I think the Metro recycles old crosswords - someone hasn't paid attention!

I can't remember the details, but I think I read that the Metro and the 'i' use crosswords that were previously printed in the 'Independent'.
