I can see that d, e-flat and e are musical notes but why semitones when they could be tones, quavers or any other sort of note?

By the way, you mention this was previously answered. I did look first but couldn’t see any queries on today’s Mail crossword.
On checking again I see the OP mistakenly gave it the subject line of DM Tuesday, which is why I didn’t look at it.
