The answer may be Tides and S may be in conflict with 44a.

But I cannot parse Tides.

Thanks all. I was being stupid.

I am being my usual stupid self here. By the end of Sunday I had a full grid and had resolved the clashes. What I am still not seeing is how to get to the name of the author. At the moment I have a jumble of 12 letters which begins ITN. Any pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated. I wish the CAPTCHA pictures were clearer!

Alwayspuzzled, getting the name was pretty time-consuming. The name begins ITA... so you're not wildly wrong. Did you do all the counting stuff?

I liked the end game.
Cagey was able to get all 11 Chapters (or parts there of) in the puzzle.
The protagonist was easy to find.
