Hi, as I am a beginner solver for cryptic crosswords, I try work out the wordplay for answers I can't solve on my own, I can't get my head around the wordplay for these clues though so I'd be grateful if they could be explained:

Turn up and bowl first in the game (6)
Ans: WOODCOCK

I understand that "the game" is the definition but that's about it.

British governor general (8)

Ans: AGRICOLA

Modern copper on beat's seen the light (4)

Ans: LAMP

Again I know the definition is "the light" and before looking at the answer, I tried to solve it using CU for "copper" but that's not in the actual answer.

Thanks in advance :)

3. I think the 'modern copper' gives you the P, penny (coppers-small change, small coins) and Lam is beat (it's a word I've only ever seen in crosswords!).

I've just noticed you've given 6 letters for the first clue, but an 8-letter answer.

turn up = cock
cock2
[kok]
verb (used with object)
to set or turn up or to one side, often in an assertive, jaunty, or significant manner:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gnaeus_Julius_Agricola

He was the governor general of Britannia.

Not a very cryptic clue unless i'm missing something.
