Gen is one of those words I've come across often in crosswords but never heard anyone use in real life. Another one is con, as in to learn something. I've never heard anyone say they were going to con a subject. And in the first interview I ever had, I was asked how many bods were at my school. I had to admit I didn't know what he was talking about.

Morning, Orson. I have heard 'gen', as in information, used in the real world - but not very often! I agree with you in gen -eral (!), there are lots of words that are seen only in crosswords. The one I detest most is SA, sex appeal, attraction, whatever - it must be decades since that was ever part of everyday speech or writing.
