Big Turtle

A strength of this site is that posters mostly display good manners, politeness and graciousness to fellow posters.

In that vein I ask, with the greatest possible deference, whether it might be considered a good idea to add to forum rules, that when receiving an answer to one's question, a word of thanks or reciprocation is customary.

In my current field of vision I see three kind responders who have been treated as mere algorithms by thankless cluefillers.

Only one rule needed . .

"Do unto others . . .

Perhaps with the rider . .

"And do not forget!"

Kt17, I agree that manners matter, but a little reminder on the forum rules probably wouldn't change things. I'm not sure if many new Forum users even look at them. I don't think I've ever read them!

It is annoying to give an answer - especially if it's for a tricky clue - and to get no acknowledgement. I think most helpers/responders don't want undying gratitude, but it is nice to know that your answer has been seen, maybe even helped someone get on with the rest of a puzzle. If I'm in a stern frame of mind, I occasionally add to the thread, with 'I hope we helped?' or 'Did this answer work?' That sometimes results in an acknowledgment.

I know myself how easy it is to get engrossed in a crossword. Maybe these posters have used the given answer/s to battle on with their puzzle, and don't want to take even a minute or two away from it to acknowledge any help?

I don't like the idea of making it a rule to say thanks.
Maybe an addition to the "Posting tips" ( if anyone reads them) for example : "If you wish to thank solvers for their help, this would be much appreciated"

I don't think it's necessary, and many don't adhere to the posting tips anyway.
If someone fails to acknowledge me on several occasions I don't help them anymore!
I also find it annoying ( but less so) when someone opens a new thread just to say thanks.

Thanks on a thread for an answer you have worked hard on is nice, but if it isn't forthcoming that's no real problem either.

It's not just about the thanks.
Sometimes I like to know if my answer was correct or not.

I missed the start of this. Was there a question from "Big Turtle" that wasn't acknowledged, or is it a codename for someone else?
I'm with rossim - if a poster repeatedly doesn't respond, I don't bother giving any more help (you know who I'm talking about, icauser!).

I agree that most new posters don't seem to have read the "Posting Hints"!

ChrisE, the subject heading is one of my dislikes - obscurely-titled topics! It's in reference to another - and interesting - post from Kt17. I 'got' the title as I'd read the earlier thread.
