?E?L?R - looks like it could be FEELER relating to groper and FEE for payment, but can't really see the parsing and how service comes in.

Any help much appreciated

Half of Feeler(this, the answer) is Fee, payment for service.

You're welcome, Gooner. I do the Eye crosswords and there are occasionally slightly odd, not totally conventional clues! I think most other crosswords would include some wordplay for the other half of Feeler.

Same query: Where does the LER come from?

Ok, I think I get it now, though I've never seen a clue construction like this one before.
