This one's been bugging me for days. Say this before drinking red english port (7). The answer is 'cheerio' but I can't work out why - please put me out of my misery.

Thanks to both of you for your speedy replies! That makes 'say this before drinking' the definition but in my book that's 'cheers' not 'cheerio' (which means goodbye.) Or am I being very dense?

Not dense at all. That’s how I would understand it too, but Chambers does say:

cheerioˈ interjection
1. Goodbye!
2. Good health! (used when drinking a toast)

So I think it’s a lesser known meaning

I've heard it used in the same sort of joking way as "down the hatch!".

Ah, they say doing crosswords helps you learn new usages. Never heard it colloquially, though. Thanks to all of you - much appreciated!
