Still a bit baffled. Have the theme but the numbers don't add up. Surely there should be 28, and they should be distinct, yet I have two As and two Ls. Any advice welcome.

Hi sloth, the 21 are 10 x 2 (ie checked letters) + 1 unchecked, totalling 11.

Like others, I very much enjoyed this puzzle. It took a while to recognise what the set was but unless I've made a mistake somewhere it seems to me that eXtent has included the home of a famous late parrot, and omitted one of the larger members of this group. The one answer I'm not 100% sure of is 11 across - simply because I cannot for the life of me parse it - though I have all the cross-checking letters.

I see ane is Scots for one, ignore the H.

Tane also means One in Scots

Did anyone see the (near perfect) symmetry of the country code locations, the circle etc! I didn't.
