With no disrespect to the setter or winner of Clueless this week, I thought your @7 clue a gem and it would have been my choice if I'd been judging.

It was a quite brilliant clue.

Hi, no offence taken rossim and I hope this is seen as constructive criticism.
As the judge of last week's Clueless I would like to add my futlrther thoughts/reasoning. I have previously mentioned that no matter how good the surface in acrostic clues the very limited number of positional letter indicators usually renders this device obvious leading to what I would describe as a "write-in".
It is somewhat similar with straight anagrams as it is rare for a seasoned solver not to quickly tie in the fodder length with the anagrind and while the answer might not be immediate in all cases the device is and in most cases these clues are usually entered first. This is why I tend to group such clues together. In this particular instance, as good as the surface is (which I acknowledged) the necessary inclusion of he/she rather than it, which would have read more naturally (to me), is the "dead giveaway" hence why I placed other clues slightly ahead.

Hi Ginge, I agree Mattrom's clue is very clever and it's easy to understand why you chose it.

Speaking personally, what I really like about Nemo@7's clue is not just the very smooth surface, but also the way the clever definition blends seamlessly in to the rest of the clue. It reminds me of Chris' "Oasis icon....." clue in a previous Clueless - again, another anagram with a very smooth surface.

That said, it would be sad day if everyone had the same thoughts and opinions. This forum represents a broad church and is all the better for it :-)

I totally agree, Brendan.
Mattrom's clue was very clever. (What more could we expect from her, she's brilliant!)
Thank you Ginge, and yes, you did acknowledge Nemo's clue.
I appreciate you taking the time to comment.

Another bump as Nemo seems to have missed it.

It is I, Nemo. (With a nod to 'Allo, 'Allo).

My apologies for not responding earlier, but a spell of good weather prompted SWMBO to produce a seemingly endless list of things for me to do in the garden. It seems to consist largely of some kind of chain reaction where the introduction of one new plant results in an urgent requirement to move about eight other plants into each other's location. I just do what I am told as experience has proved that resistance is fruitless.

Thank you, rossim and brendan for your kind remarks about my clue. I must admit that I was quite pleased with it but I am delighted that two such talented players should record their appreciation.

In terms of relative merit, assessment is in the gift of the individual: hence there will usually be a range of votes in Peer Review. For Clueless, the rules are quite clear: the setter chooses and we don't argue with the umpire. Parliament please note.

Notwithstanding, I now start the week with a cheerful disposition, so thanks to you both for that. It will sustain me while I toil at my manual (and, indeed, pedal) al fresco horticultural labours.

Hi Nemo

A friend gave me a plant at the weekend and I've been doing my own version of crop rotation. I know exactly what you mean!

I shan't be entering PR this week as I'll be away, but good luck.

I, also will be away so won't be competing this week. (I'm not sulking, honest!).
