Hello, Penda.
My 10th edition was first published in 2006.
Is your "edition" not printed on one of the pages at the front of the book?

Hi Rusty NO Its got a list of the publishing years and the reprint years- but not the editions. Thought it might be possible to find it by extrapolation OR intrapolation. From what you say it sounds like a possible 9th or 8th. Thanks for your help etc.

AND malone iappreciate your kind remarks

Have a happy "sabbath" Thea(o)

Thanks for that, Rusty.

Penda, my thirteenth edition was published in 2014. Like Rusty, I feel this information's usually mentioned in the first few pages.

I found a history of The Chambers Dictionary online. Most of the editions of what used to be called The Chambers Twentieth Century Dictionary were not given an official number. The first to be numbered was the 7th, published as the Chambers English Dictionary in 1988. The next edition, the 8th, was the first to use the TCD name, and was published in 1993. Then there was the 9th edition in 1998, and the confusingly named New 9th edition in 2003, followed by the 10th edition in 2006, the 11th edition in 2008, the 12th edition in 2011, and the 13th in 2014. There was a revised 13th edition, which appeared in 2016, and this is the edition referred to in Listener preambles.

Hi, penda,

Glad to be of help.

My first Chambers was the 7th, the 1988 edition. This was retired to my office at work when I got the New 9th edition in 2003. I still have this, along with the original 13th edition from 2014. I kept the 2003 edition because the 2014 edition had a production glitch which meant that it left out several hundred words, which were in earlier editions.

I’ve heard that there is likely to be a new 14th edition later this year, I hope in time for Christmas.
